The Owego United Methodist Church Men’s Group

The Men’s Group was the idea of two men who believed that the vitality and the growth of the church comes through its small groups. We believed that one such group should be a men’s group. For at least two years, it was often the topic of our conversations, but we didn’t know how to start one. We finally decided to step out on faith and simply invite men, one-on-one, to come. Some accepted the invitation and some didn’t.

Our group started with three or four men and has grown into two groups that meet every Wednesday. One meets at 8:00 am in Fellowship Hall and the other meets at 7:00 pm in room 206.

The morning group has been meeting for about three years and has grown from three to about 12 men. When you add in the evening group there are more than 15 men. The attendance varies from week to week depending on who is away, who decides to sleep in and for some of us older men, who remembers which day of the week it is.

We are an informal group. We often begin with a check-in question to get the conversation started. Everyone can contribute to the topic under discussion, and pass is always an appropriate response. We don’t always agree, but we can discuss the topic and agree to disagree. The group is about spiritual growth, accountability, comradery, fellowship and friendship.

Typically, we use the Upper Room Devotional because the Wednesday devotion also has discussion questions which makes preparation straight forward and we seldom get through every question. For a while, we used the Bible verses Pastor Jamie preaches on in his Sunday Sermon for discussion. We recently studied forgiveness using Adam Hamilton’s book Finding Peace Through Forgiveness. Currently we are studying Spiritual Gifts.

Anyone can bring up a topic for discussion, so some days we do not get to the Upper Room.

In 2016 we were involved in the following activities:

  • We hosted the Chicken Barbecue for the Strawberry Festival enabling us to contribute $1,000 dollars to the General Fund.
  • We donated $500 to the Conference Africa 360 program to fight Malaria in Africa.
  • Another $600 dollars was contributed to the General Fund from the Family Fun Days Chicken Barbecue.
  • We sponsor a breakfast on the second Saturday of every Month.
  • We partnered with the Dortheans and split the purchase price of the Defibrillator that is mounted in Fellowship Hall.
  • We partnered with the Dortheans and the Evangelism Committee and split the cost of purchasing a Christian Video License which will enable the church to put on Family Movie Nights during the year.
  • We also partnered with the Dortheans to purchase a two-sided sign with wheels that can be placed in the front of the church to publicize events going on in the life of the Church.
  • Defrayed the cost of repairing the Chicken Barbecue rig we use to barbecue chickens.
  • We donated money to Heifer International the last two years for the purchase of animals which will help families in third world countries become self-supporting.
  • For more information, feel free to contact Jack Spaulding, Jeff Dimick or Chuck Hogancamp.
  • The Men’s Group is available to any male in the congregation. You are invited to come and join us on Wednesdays at either 8:00 am or 7:00 pm, and bring a friend.
